But “This Sounds Serious,” now in its third season, deftly avoids these problems. Scripted fictional podcasts, including satirical ones, often exude a self-serious, stagey artifice that, at least for me, can produce involuntary shuddering. What a surprise it was to listen to the satirical investigative podcast “This Sounds Serious: Grand Casino,” from Castbox and the Vancouver production company Kelly & Kelly, and laugh my head off over and over again. This was a year in which you really noticed a good laugh-what is this sound, this feeling?-and appreciated the hell out of it. Here’s to 2021, and may things only get better. And three long-running favorite podcasts of mine put out exceptional, must-listen episodes: the wrenching “ Remembering Lynn Shelton,” on Marc Maron’s “WTF,” which Maron released two days after the death of his partner, the brilliant and beloved director Lynn Shelton “ Curtis Flowers,” in which Madeleine Baran, the reporter-host of “In the Dark,” the podcast that helped free Flowers from prison after twenty-three years, finally interviews him and “Reply All” ’s “ The Case of the Missing Hit,” which brought us unlikely joy, via a mysterious Barenaked Ladies-like earworm, as we adjusted to our new reality in March. Deeply reported local documentaries continued to flourish, sometimes at NPR affiliates meanwhile, Spotify and other gargantuan parties continued to gobble up greater percentages of the podsphere, but independent creators doing truly original things thrived, too. In March, Covid-specific series sprang up-the one I liked best was a nearly robotic, just-the-facts situation called “ Coronavirus 411”-and, as the pandemic set in, many shows made great use of the power of voices to connect listeners in isolation. I also appreciated shows that gave me useful information in a form I could stand. The podcasts that stood out to me most this year, not surprisingly, were those that transported me-especially when they made me laugh. New Yorker writers reflect on the year’s highs and lows.

Primary Adrenal Insufficiency, also called Addison’s disease, is a severe or total deficiency of the hormones made in the adrenal cortex, caused by its destruction. There are normally two adrenal glands, located one above each kidney. The adrenal glands are really two endocrine (ductless or hormone producing) glands in one. The inner part of the adrenal gland (called the medulla) produces epinephrine (also called adrenaline) which is produced at times of stress and helps the body respond to “fight or flight” situations by raising the pulse rate, adjusting blood flow, and raising blood sugar. However, the absence of the adrenal medulla and epinephrine does not cause disease. Nausea, sometimes with vomiting, and diarrhea are common.Blood pressure is low and falls further when a person is standing, producing lightheadedness.A chronic, steadily worsening fatigue, loss of appetite, and some weight loss. What are the symptoms of Addison’s Disease? The adrenal cortex makes two important steroid hormones.ĬORTISOL mobilizes nutrients, modifies the body’s response to inflammation, stimulates the liver to raise the blood sugar, helps to control the amount of water in the body. In contrast, the outer portion of the adrenal gland, the cortex, is more critical. The tar tools (linux.iso) and OSPs shipped with VMware Tools 10.3.x release will continue to be supported. Its overall look is like the combined aesthetics of the Air Jordan 10 and the Air Jordan 11. You prefer a basketball shoe that can actually be used for playing basketball and not just for everyday casual ridesĪccording to some, the Max Aura is an interesting offer from the Jordan brand. You want a basketball shoe that offers excellent traction and grip for any type of court. You are looking for a pair that can withstand games with intense plays.Unsure about your size? You can check the Jordan shoes size chart here. This basketball shoe is a great match for you if: The herringbone also provides some nice traction, and although this may not be particularly useful if you are wearing the shoe casually, it is great for playing basketball, or for any kind of exercise for that matter. The sole unit held up well in all weather conditions, and the rubber outsole seems very durable, still being completely intact after some light wear. Especially for what is supposedly a performance basketball model, you would be right to expect a newer and more effective cushioning system. The Air unit did compress and was relatively comfortable, but for $120, I would still prefer a shoe with a Zoom unit or React cushioning. Admittedly considering the shoes basic cushioning set up, I expected the sole to offer very little comfort, but whilst it was certainly nothing to write home about, it was much better than we first thought. The sneaker does not excel in neither department but is surely a big improvement from the retros it was inspired from. The simple design of the upper is reflected in the comfort and support it provides. It matches just right with the upper and helps giving the sneaker a sleek, streamlined look. The sole unit design is quite simple which makes sense since the patent leather upper pretty much takes the spotlight. The midsole then features a dimple pattern under the heel, and the outsole is covered in a simple herringbone traction on the sole. The sole unit is constructed from a standard foam midsole, and a rubber outsole, but with a visible bottom loaded Air unit in the heel. But this is an easily avoidable downside given that this is a shoe that you’ll likely wear outdoors most of the time. The only complaint I had while doing this Jordan Aura 2 review was its breathability, as whilst the thick build of the sneaker provided a comfortable ride, it also prevented the feet from staying cool in the heat. The upper is also very comfortable thanks to its padded heel and tongue and the patent leather, other than its luxurious looks it also adds some nice protection on the court or the muddy streets. The glossy black finish of the patent leather contrasting with the matte black nubuck looks great and stopped the sneaker from blending into an indistinguishable black mess. The triple black colorway that I got, which is normally not a particularly flattering colorway for this kind of shoe, actually suits the Max Aura 2 rather well. For a basketball model that was released this year, it looks straight out of Jordan Brand’s 90’s-2000’s catalog, in the best possible way. Overall, the Max Aura 2’s upper looks pretty good and is definitely the shoe’s biggest upside. The shoe utilizes rope laces and features the Jumpman logo as the only branding on the ankle and tongue. A small nubuck piece and thick mesh with a XIII retro’s pattern add a smooth finish to the upper construction. The upper is dominated by the patent leather that wraps around the shoe, an element that will always be associated with the Jordan XI retro sneaker. It strikes just a right balance between a basketball shoe and a “street” sneaker, with great looks and just enough technology to shine on the court. The design seems more streamlined and they feel quite lightweight for a hi top sneaker. Out of the box these look very sleek, definitely not as bulky as its predecessor. This year the Jordan brand came up with the second edition of the shoe, keeping the elements from the XI retro with a tint of XIII design elements. One such shoe is the Jordan Max Aura 2, as the sequel to the Jordan Max Aura, that is inspired by the brands rich legacy and is “Made for the street.” The first edition released in 2019 looked like a hybrid of the X and XI retros which for some sneakerheads was an odd combination while others knowing about it even questioned its authenticity. Some of these new styles, like the Dub Zero, the 6 Rings or the Stay Loyal are branded as hybrids. Whilst lesser known to the average sneaker fan, in recent years Jordan Brand has added a plethora of performance basketball sneakers to their shelves, outside of their main Air Jordan line. The Jordan Aura 2 just arrived on shelves this summer and since I got a pair of the triple black colorway it was the time to review its features. It’s $5 every 3 months for a refill, but the metal floss container does cost more ($15), whereas the plastic version is only $5. It’s $5 every 3 months regardless of if you purchased plastic or the metal/plastic combo.įloss - Nick prefers flossers and I use activated charcoal floss. Head - This is the basic plan and what we did! Every 3 months Quip ships you a new brush head, which includes a new battery. I couldn’t find anywhere how much money is donated, but these are both reputable organizations! They also have a red/white one that benefits (product)red, and is $40. Right now one is all black, benefits the Global Dentist Relief Foundation, and costs $50. We just bought the toothbrush alone.Ĭharity - Quip has 2 charity editions. It comes with the brush, toothpaste, and floss. Set - You can buy a plastic set for $30 or a plastic/metal set for $55. Metal/Plastic - These are really pretty and I wish the plastic versions had prettier colors, but I didn’t really see the benefit in buying the metal version for $15 more. Kind of sad the kids version has more color options in plastic, but not a huge deal. Let’s get started! Read below and/or I made a YouTube video. It is important to note that he is a longstanding electric toothbrush user, whereas I have never had one. I’m going to give my opinion, but also pepper in where Nick and I had different opinions. Hah! Like I mentioned, we have been using them for almost 3 months now, so I feel good about telling you the ins and outs of this toothbrush! I’m going to review the Quip toothbrush on 3 areas: price, design, and usage. To be honest, he was actually really excited when they came in. I had had enough - after all… I kiss that mouth, so it’s actually part mine.Īnyway, I had been eyeing Quip on and off, but had heard about it once more on The Skimm and was like, “yeah, Nick and I are getting new toothbrushes.” HOW ADULT. He always put the cap on it, which was really gross looking, not to mention that one of our cats liked to chew on the head when Nick wasn’t looking. I thiiiink he has had the same electric toothbrush head since before we got married. Now before you go and give Nick all the dental hygiene credit, I just want to say that he is the reason I bought the Quip toothbrushes for us in the first place. Nick on the other hand is pretty much the king of flossing. Same with flossing! I mean I do it enough, but I don’t do it every day. I mean I always brushed my teeth twice a day, if not three times, but never had self-moving bristles and let’s be real…never for the magic 2 minutes that you are supposed to. I just used the toothbrushes that I was given at the dentist and called it a day. Nick had been using one for a while, but I had never experienced it. Until about 3 months ago, I had never used an electric toothbrush. Quip Toothbrush | Outdoor Voices Cloudknit Top (c/o) | Tom’s of Maine Fluoride-Free Toothpaste | Hello Activated Charcoal Floss Having a loud conversation, talking loud on the phone, or listening to loud music are considered very impolite as you will disturb other people. When you are on public transportation or in the doctors' waiting rooms, you are supposed to stay silent. Make loud noise in publicĬompared to many other countries, German people are very quiet. Breaking the rule and crossing the street on the red light is very frowned upon. You should be a good role model for the children. This “don’t” is fundamental when children are around. Even when no car is coming, they do not cross the road on the red pedestrian light. Cross the street when the traffic light is red For example, he may want you to bring some drinks, snacks, or dessert. If you are invited to a house party or a dinner at home, you can ask the host if he needs something. Please note that gifts are usually opened when received. If you are not sure what to get, just buy something general like a bottle of wine, chocolate, or flowers. For example, if you visit someone, it is polite to bring a small gift. You should learn about gift-giving in Germany when living here. Sometimes, the colleagues may have a small gift for the birthday person. It is common for the birthday person to bring a cake for their colleagues at work. And they will give you birthday gifts in return. You are supposed to provide food and drinks for your guests. Should you want a party, you will have to host it yourself. If it’s your birthday, don't expect your friends to throw a party for you. Believe it or not, not doing so will result in seven years of bad sex. When clinking glasses, it is essential to look into each other's eyes. When you are in a group, you should wait until everybody has their drink and only start drinking after clinking glasses. In Germany, it is common to have alcohol with lunch or dinner. This practice is considered very bad, and you may even receive complaints from other people if they see you doing so. Never throw your rubbish randomly into the bins. Ask your roommates or neighbors how it works if you are not sure. It may be a bit confusing for foreigners at the beginning. People separate their rubbish at home (e.g., organic waste, paper, glass, and plastics). Germany is a very environmentally friendly country. This is to make sure that they have time for you. If you want to hang out with your friends, it is better to call or text them shortly before seeing them. You should also make a Termin when visiting a doctor, a hairdresser, or any governmental body. This does not only apply to business meetings. If you have other important appointments, such as a flat visit when looking for a rental flat, it is even better to arrive a few minutes earlier. This rule also applies to business meetings and social situations. It is rude to be late without a valid reason. But if you are going to be later than that, make sure to call the other person and let them know beforehand. It may be acceptable if you are a few minutes late. When a German person wants to meet you at 3 p.m., they really mean 3 p.m., not 3:15 pm or 3:30 pm. Be on timeĪfter moving to Germany, you will probably notice that German people are very punctual. You can say Auf Wiedersehen or Tschüss when you leave, which means bye. Just move on with your shopping, or sit down quietly. You do not need to initiate a conversation afterward. When you enter a shop or a waiting room at your doctor's office, greet the people there. A handshake is more appropriate in business. If you meet close friends or family, you can give hugs instead. This practice is not limited to the business environment but also happens on social occasions. Similarly, German people also shake hands when they leave. When joining a group, it is common to shake hands with each person for greeting. However, I liked that curve at the bottom, it seems to be compatible with how I sleep and that prompted me to test another curved bottom pillow which brings me to: I might have adjusted to it but that smell was too gross. I fluffed it a bit to mix the filling and it helped but it had this weird consistency, probably due to the bounciness of the latex. Super firm in some areas and soft in others. When I got it, I took it out of the top case to check it out and it got white powder, which I assume is latex, all over my bed. Latex can smell weird but this was another level. Went right back.Įli and Elm Side Sleeper - this pillow could have been great but the drawbacks were too big. Well, the next one I got was even softer. So I returned this one and got another thinking I had a bad one. EDIT My mom got one of these too and kept complaining hers was too firm. I've stuck with it for over a month now, and I haven't returned it yet, but I'm not done looking. It works a little better when I sleeping on a wedge. But while my head and ears love it, my neck does not and I think it's because I need more loft, although tricks like putting a folded towel under it didn't help as much as I thought, so maybe it's a support issue. It feels almost between latex and memory foam in the best way. It's soft enough that it doesn't cause ear pain and it doesn't get too hot. Tuft & Needle Foam Pillow - I wanted this one to work so bad. I gave it to my husband who is quite a bit larger than me, and it his favorite pillow. Also even with it seeming too soft, it made my ear hurt. So I exchanged it for a medium and it was way softer and I just could not get comfortable with it. It had a good level of firmness but was way to tall for my neck. Purple Harmony - I bought this at a Denver Mattress store and they only had the tall in stock and I wanted it right away. The core of it is pretty firm though and I got ear pain from it. I really liked the shoulder cutout and it was a good loft for me. Therapedic Shoulder Contour Bed Pillow - This one wasn't terrible. Hurt my ear and just was not comfortable. I like it stayed cool and the level of neck support and that's it. Purple Pillow - Recommended by a friend who hated the COOP pillow. Also, even though I returned it a couple of months ago, I'm still finding filling all over my house from adjusting it all the time. If I put it at the support level I want, it's too tall. If I put it at the proper height, its too soft. The height to width ratio to get the support I need has changed. They only come in queen and king now, so I bought a queen, and its not the same at all. However, it got ruined when I washed it, so I bought a new one. Here is my review of several pillows I've tried so far.Ĭoop Eden - This pillow worked for me for a couple of years when I got in the standard size. I cover all my pillows in a silk pillowcase, too, so cover material isn't that important to me as long as I don't feel it through the cover. I would say it's still pretty soft though. I have a king-size soft-side waterbed (the kind of bed that is a foam frame with a water core) and a firm latex topper. This means super firm pillows don't work for me. I also have TMJ and am prone to ear pain at night. I have had neck issues for years, likely due to having a job where I'm at a desk all day. I sleep on my side mostly, though I do occasionally roll onto my back. Broad shoulders for my size from years of weight lifting, but not more broad than average. I'm in my early 40s, am 5'3.5", and about 135 lbs. I figured I should share my findings in case someone else finds them helpful. I've been lurking around here for months trying to find a pillow to help my neck, back and TMJ/ear pain issues. We also sell other branded items like cups, signs, magnets, and ornaments.
